AH Naval Challenge: Sink the Iowas

On a target with a rapidly changing aspect? Especially one that has any sort of countermeasures deployed?

Where, exactly, IS the center of mass for a target that is bow on to the approach path of an ADCAP? Especially when that target is a 100,000 ton carrier or 50,000 ton BB.

Here is a different article of faith:

ALWAYS believe the other side is at LEAST as competent as you are.

It is actually better to plan for them being slightly better, but at least expecting parity is utterly critical. The side that forgets this one tend to wind up dead.

I see that we've reached the limits of what I can confirm or deny.

A small correction indeed is needed, as I twankled HMIJS Myoko and Takao, both at Singapore. It was Takao attacked by the X craft, not Myoko.

To make things more interesting about the dangers of torpedohits, a torpedo not only causes direct damage, which is a leak in the hull, which may be, or not large enough to sink a vessel by flooding. It also creates secondary damage by the sheer force of the warhead exploding, which is often more critical than the direct damage alone. Depending on where the torpedo strikes, the damage can be variable to either systemdamage to propulsion, weapons, electronics and so on, besides the human factor. A torpedo (or even amine) explosion near one of the large magazines can cause a chain of reactions, triggering a magazinedetonation, due to the concussiondamage it creates. (Like with HMS Barham, HMIJS Fuso and HMIJS Kongo) The close proximity of the foreward main magazines on all USN post Treaty BB's to the outer hull, is therefore a serious weakness in their desing, as a more fully shaped hull with magazines more at the center of the hull would provide a better protection. (as in the King George V Class for example.) So a well palced single torpedo, or mine, or even a close nearmiss of a large HE bomb can result in a fatal magazine explosion.

Yes exactly.

The conning tower and the forward glacis are not part of the armored citadel. And, frankly, word is that any penetration was done by 16" shells from Rodney.

Did KGV help mission kill Bismarck? OH, YES. But, so what? A bunch of cruisers and destroyers mission killed Hiei. Did she help batter Bismarck so badly that Bismarck was a defenseless wreck? Yes.

Did any of KGV's 14" peashooters "defeat" Bismarck's armor? No.

No but the Prince of Wales 14" peashooters DID mission kill Bismarck. She severed Bismarck's fuel line and this KILLED Bismarcks mission of commerce raiding.
