Conquering Sun
In 1854 Commodore Matthew Perry of the US navy visited Japan with 7 war ships and requested the Shogun to sign a "treaty of peace and amity" with the US. When Perry had visited Japan the previous year he took note of the Japanese "rising sun" flag. He drew a picture of the flag on its pole and wrote the phrase "Sol Invictus" beneath it. He left his scribble behaind and forgot all about it. Now, upon his return, he was informed that the drawing had been given to the shogun. Now it was the official flag of Japan.
