AH Discussion: Mongols in the Philippines

Is it possible for the Mongols to get to the Philippines and establish a khanate?

What are the possible locations for the said ATL Mongol state?

How will this affect Southeast Asian history?

Any other possibilities?

Let's discuss.

The mongols weren't really proficient in seafare. Riding horses was kind of their thing. They tried invading Japan twice, but both times they were beaten badly. I don't think they would even attempt to go to the Philippines

This. But also, what does the Philippines have that the Mongols couldn't get from other conquests? Given that the Philippines are relatively far away from the rest of the Mongol conquests and would be hard to hold on to, I think there would have to be some pretty big reward for them to even attempt it.

I'm referring to them getting to the Philippines by accident.
Well, there were revolts of the Mongols against Khubilai khan. These were other Borigines/Chingizzids who aspire for the throne or something. But they were mostly in the North.

But you may have a POD like this: there was a Mongol (say Borigin) who was in charge of the Southern Mongol fleet during the last phase of the Mongol conquest of the Song. This fleet included hundreds ships, large contingents of Chinese sailors and Mongol troops.
This Borigin general took part in a treason against khan Khubilai with the center of the treason somewhere North. The treason failed in the North and it became obvious that our Borigin general had no chance to win alone against triumphant Khubilai khan. So this Mongol general takes his ships with his Chinese sailors and Mongol soldiers and sails somewhere far from China - to the Philippines. And he gets away with this, meaning that Khublai Khan doesn't send fleets after him or these fleets are crushed by storms or something.

pretty much ASB though

If they discover the Philippines by accident it still doesn't change anything. They still would have trouble reaching it, it would be out of the way, there isn't much to offer that the Mongols don't already have, and they would have to defend the territory they did capture at tremendous cost in both money and men. In short it wouldn't be worth it.

But the Mongols reached Java. How's that?

Heck, there's even a timeline where the Mongols managed to cross the Pacific, landing in the New World.

They attacked as a punitive expedition after one of Kublai Khan's ministers in Java was branded in the face and had his ears hacked off. And the Mongols got their asses kicked and never bothered with Java again. Any attempt to establish a khanate in the Philippines will end just as badly.

Getting there and conquering the locals is possible.

However, there is no reason to stay in the Philippines except probably if the Mongols wanted more gold.

The spanish retained philippines due to the chinese frequent trading to manila. The Mongols already have direct access to the chinese market.

I can say it is possible, the invasion force directed to Java shipwrecks in manila. Establishes a trade port to ship the gold mined in luzon. However, I don't know if the Mongols had any sort of gold shortages at this time.
