AH Debate: Federal vs State in Larger US

Let us suppose a scenario in which the United States stretches across much more of North America. For convenience's sake, we'll say the current US + Canada + Mexico. Feel free to adjust that if you think it will make a difference in the discussion. Also assume that the Constitution is relatively similar to the historical one, at least upon its adoption.

Regardless, the situation is generally the same: The United States has a much larger territory, a larger (and possibly more diverse) population, and a larger number of states.

What influence will this have on the federal nature of the US government? Will we see a more or less centralized government? Will the constituent states have more or less authority?
