AH: China stays progressive after Yuan Dynasty - A Steampunk Orient

Is there any way that China, during the Late Middle Ages and during or after the Yuan, could possibly not stagnate and fall behind Europe tech-wise like in OTL? Could it stay progressive and start inventing better guns, steam-power, and other marvels that the Europeans invented first IOTL? Second off, what made China stagnate in the first place? Third, could a TL be written?

You would have to Change the Yuan's structure and try to butterfly plagues and natural disasters if you want the Yuan to last. With the Ming not having an emperor get captured by the Mongols,no Imjin War, and no silver crisis or little ice age could help.Whatever Dynasty you use your gonna have to deal with the view of Sino-Centrism, to open up china to new ideas. The Chinese didn't believe they need anything, if you can change this, China could continue to be progressive.
