There was one of the major German generals (I can't remember who), that requested permission to use gas once the German drive on Moscow stalled just outside the city, but was denied.
If the Germans find out that the allies don't have any nerve gas, then they are probably going to initiate gas warfare regardless of the situation.
One famous incident was when Germans bombed the transport ship John Harvey full of chemical weapons. If the Germans find out about it it is possible that they could develop the flawed interpretation that the allies are going to use gas, and then they would try and preempt that.
Also, there was apparently a serious plan to use chemical weapons against the Japanese in 1943 that got cancelled.
chemical weapons are not effective in freezing temperatures the germans learned that in ww1 on the eastern front
since there wasnt effective gear for nerve agents yet it would have been pointless for the germans to use it because they couldn't then occupy the ground that they just gassed. the british had serious stocks of anthrax that they had done intense experimentation. they could have dumped huge loads of anthrax randomly on german cities.
it would have been the end of western europe
