AH Challenge- What if New England had Succeeded

Leading up to the 1850's and still somewhat by the time the civil war rolled around there was still a good amount of talk of it. Here's the challenge, make a timeline where New England succeeds prior to the civil war and have it extend until 1900.

DUN-da-da-DUNDUN-dahdun-DUNdun-Decades!-of!DARKNESS!

(Or, one of our most enormous, venerable, and respected TLs is on this very topic).

Succeed:

2) To develop or turn out as planned;
3) To do well in a particular area or field;
4) To come after somthing/someone, to follow.

Secede:
To withdraw formally, e.g. from a political or religious body, or an alliance.

What if New England succeeded to secede!?:p

Are you saying New England was unsuccessful OTL? I'd say they've been one of the most successful regions of the country...

The War of 1812 is probably the best time to do it... I should note that from a literalist perspective, arguably DoD isn't a "true" New England secession, as it includes places like NY and NJ. A smaller NE including only the then-five New England states would probably result in a significantly different path.

The most likely cause of succession would be the War of 1812. However the critics of the war were ironically the Federalists. New England succedes in 1812 but sucession is initially resisted. The New Englanders have the choice of seeking protection from the crown or risking invasion. However the loss of New England creates problems for any invasion of Canada. A peace treaty is signed between Britain and the United States recognising the independence of New England.

The departure of New England removes a large abolitionist block from the USA which expands to the South West. Accomodation is reached with Britain over the Northern border with Oregon becoming part of Britiash North America.

There is no civil war but tension exists between the United States and New England over sanctuary for runaway slaves as the New England courts rule in favour of Dredd Scott. Increased tension along the border leads to New England deciding to join Canada once Canada has self government. Slavery gradually abolished in the United States when it becomes demonstrated it is economically inefficient. After 1900 Canada develops into a major world power and whilst remaining nominally a monarchy is effectively the most powerful dominion more powerful than Britain

LOL, its kinda funny that Abe Lincoln cannot spell secede !

Maybe that explains the civil war...
