AH challenge: War Elephants in the Americas?

Your challenge, should you choice to accept it, is to have North African War Elephants be introduced to the Americas by a Medditerran power in the same way as horses where re-introduced in OTL. Bonus points if there is still a feral population of wild elephants in the Americas as of 2013.

Given how much of a hassle it was merely to ferry them across small straights, i doubt it would be viable to have a classical culture ship them around the world.

Making it so Elephants are used for war in America, without any specifications is certainly possible ... just let Wooly Mammoths survive (one way or another) and evolve. When they were alive they crossed Bering as well and spread all the way to Mexico, and dwarf mammoths lived on isolated Alaskan islands till 3750bc

Here's something for you. Carthage introduces elephants to Spain. These are selectivly breed to obey humans, and to do everyday farm labor. The Romans see how useful they are and how powerful they arm in combat, and Adopt them breeding new varieties to create a northern breed which they introduce to all the countries that would later become colonising powers. Aztecs fear Spainards who come with Steel armor, Swords, Guns, and fully armored horses and elephants. Dito for the Incas. Some survive the sinking of a ship, and being great swimmers swim to the shores along side horses. Wild breeds of mustang elephant and horses begin to evolve in the Americas. The horse and elephant, two species which where driven to extinction in the Plestocene Americas are reintroduced.
