AH Challenge: US War in the Americas

Your challenge, if you choose to accept it, is to create a situation where the United States goes to war in Latin America or South America between 1945-1990. The Cuban Missile Crisis does not count.

What I'm wondering about is whether or not there would be a potential for the US to invoke the Monroe Doctrine during this time period and fight an undeclared war (similar to Vietnam?) in the Americas.

How would such a war affect things?

- Castro tries to get revenge over the Bay of Pigs incident by invading Florida. When he does (or tries), Kennedy launches an invasion of Cuba. Cuban Communism ends then. (This has been actually done in "Venceremos!" here in AH.com...)

- In 1980, several Guatemalan people took refuge in the Spanish embassy in Managua, and the police decided to put the building on fire, killing all the people inside. If the Guatemalan had tried to take refuge in the USA embassy and the police response was the same, maybe the USA could respond with war...

They could go into Colombia if the drug war gets bloodier and Escobar does something big, 9/11ish.

Edit: He needs a quicker careeer to be in the time frame requested but but why not....

Do you want an actual declaration of war or just a military engagement/police action?

If the former then the Soviet Union has to be involved, and it'll probably be as part of a wider Third World War.

If the latter then there have been several already, etc: Dominican Republic in 1965, Grenada in 1983, Panama in 1989/1990, and The War On Drugs.

maybe the falklands. if argentina was able to kick off the brits, and keep the island, and maybe some other small things,(i.e. argentina supporting anti US govs, sponsoring terrorists against america, anti US gov), the US might do a land invasion of Argentina to help ally, or just start a bombing campaign. maybe even pull NATO in with it.

An Argentinan Facist party takes control of the Argentinian government. They Form and Alliance with Venezuela and Columbia(simillar political events occur in this country as well). These three countries start attacking the smaller countries within the continent such as Paraguay and Bolivia. Brazil goes communist so the Soviet Union gets involved, sending weapons and other aid(probably not soldiers). The US then decides to side with Argentina until Columbia invades Panama. The U.S. then sides with Peru who is neither Facist or Communist.
This war would most likely would have to have taken place in the late 1940's.
