AH Challenge: Unopposed party in the United States?

There are some super-safe seats in the House of Reps where only one major party runs, though there are always independents to necessitate an election.

Sure. Tea Party candidates sweep the upcoming mid-term elections. Facing gridlock, Obama is able to do nothing to prevent the Great Recession from deepening into a second depression. The Republican spin machine is able to put the blame solely on Obama's shoulders, leading to a Palin landslide in 2012 and Tea Partiers earning super-majorities in both houses. Shortly after her inauguration, AQ attacks the US with WMDs. She uses this to push through an Enabling Act titled Patriot Two, which the Tea Party congress rubber stamps. This outlaws opposition parties and grants Palin dictatorial powers.

The discussion page of that wiki article says that they split the party into moderate and left wings so as to have the appearence of an opposition until the next election.

For a somewhat serious answer --

Any of the Deep Southern states, pre-Civil Rights and the "Southern Strategy", could hold an all-Democratic legislature -- in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't at some point OTL.

More recently, Massachusetts has come pretty damned close -- there are so few Republicans that every member of the GOP caucus holds a "leadership position".

Still, this is a steep hill to climb because

a) The grand American tradition of gerrymandering tends to leave at least a few ultra-safe seats for both parties. A lock-out could probably only occur in a fairly small and homogeneous state -- Vermont, maybe, or a Dakota.

b) Most states are modeled after the federal Congress, with staggered terms for Senators ... so while you could knock out the House in one blowout year, it would take repeated punishments to lock a party out of both chambers.
