With a PoD of no earlier than 1 January 1901, see if you can turn any of the following countries into a "great power" by 1 January 2009. To qualify as a great power, the nation must have the following characteristics:

- Strong influence on the world economy
- Capable of large-scale international military power projection
- Major diplomatic influence in world affairs
- Major cultural soft power

Current OTL great powers include China, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States (also a superpower), Japan and Russia. Historical great powers include, among others, Austria-Hungary and Italy.

The list of candidates (current OTL middle powers which were once great powers, eg. Austria, or currently considered to be in contention for great power/superpower status in the near future, eg. Brazil, have been removed):

If you come up with a timeline where a political entity consisting of the territory currently covered by these nations, but as a union between several nations listed or including the territory of non-listed nations, becoming a great power, that would also be acceptable (eg. unified Australia & New Zealand, unified Scandinavia, Iran with territorial possessions in Iraq or Afghanistan, etc).
