AH Challenge: The Hon Mel Gibson, Prime Minister of Australia

Lately, I have had a timeline idea that involves Mel Gibson somehow becoming Prime Minister of Australia; however, I have been unable to create a plausible enough scenario as to how Gibson would do so. Thus, your challenge, if you choose to accept it is to make Mel Gibson become Prime Minister of Australia by the absolute latest of Saturday, November 10, 2001, and the earliest by Saturday, March 5, 1993. Combined with these regulations is that Gibson in this TL must have had an acting career prior to this period. Enjoy!

Na ga happen.

Hutton (Mel's father) is a, er, very non-mainstream influence on his son. Think of it in terms of the Jesuit/Michael Apted slogan, "Give me the child until he is seven, and I will show you the man."

And that man is quite incompatible with major party politics. The famous drunken outburst, that's a version of Mel Gibson's core belief system.

But what if Hutton is removed from the picture before he can shape the boy, I hear you ask. Well, then, in that case the family most likely doesn't have a reason to move from upstate New York to Australia.

But that's a POD for an uninfected Mel to enter politics in the US, not in another country.
