AH Challenge: Socialism/Social Democracy strong in the US

I wasn't sure whether to put it in pre-1900 or post-1900, but your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to make Socialism and/or Social Democracy as big in the US as it is in Europe by the present day. Bonus points if you make the US a Marxist-Leninist state by 2009.

This should go in After 1900. You can make socialism a bit more popular in the United States if you butterfly away the Soviet Union. If you do that, there would be no Red Scare. You could see socialism becoming popular in the Rust Belt, and in the South where blacks largely still live in a state of slavery in all but name (sharecropping).

Their are three things you really have to do;

1. Prevent the laws that basically all but destroyed the labour and Worker's movements in the early 20th century..

2. Not have Socialism linked to rabid isolationism and pacifism, America may have at the time not been interested in the rest of the world,
but their stances hurt their support in the end and were part of the reason the government actively worked to suppress them, since they
saw them as a threat to the War Effort in the First World War.

3. Give it different leadership over time, The Socialist Party had some good leadership, but over time it's leadership has sucked greatly,
which is itself part of the reason their are now a dozen different parties all descended from the original Socialist Party.

Also make it appear more "American". By this I mean that in the early 1900s a lot of the fear surrounding the Socialist Party was how foriegn many of the people appeared to be. A couple of English language Newspapers and some prominent folks not named Debs would help a bit. But I think the previous poster is right on with the legal stuff in point 1.
