AH Challenge: President George Romney

The challenge here, if you choose to accept it, is to make George Romney, father of the presumptive Republican nominee for the 2012 election, President of the United States at some point during the years Romney Sr. was politically active. I realize how hard a challenge this is, or at least, I think I appreciate that, so I understand if this is impossible. Of course, if it is possible I'd find it interesting to hear what a Romney Presidency might have looked like.

No brainwashing statement, also it is probably best if Nixon does not run.
My high school teacher said that if he won the nomination, there would have been a lawsuit challeging the Mexican born candidate's right to serve. I assume a 9-0 Supreme Court decision saying anyone born a US citizen is a natural born citizen.

no brainwashing state ment. nixon picks romeny.
george romeny defeats jimmy carter in 1976 goes down in history as a average president. edmund muskie from 1980-1989.
now in 2012 the son of president geroge romeny is going to run for the office his farther once held. i like to see someone write a timeline about this.
or rockerfeller becomes president in 1968 romeny v.p rockerfeller loses to in 72 romeny wins in 76.I think romeny would be vice president first.i am no expert but thats my opinion.

*Sigh* I'm giving in. I have had designs on using Romney for a very long time, and jealously guard everything I can. I speak little on him, because I have my own plans. I share none of the information my research turns up, because I have my own plans. I ignored these threads and let them be, because I have my own plans. And divulging even a little something could let someone beat me to the punch.

But I give in. Watch. Learn. Steal too much from my future plans and I beat chu.

Pretty much the above is all that you need.

Nixon wasn't committed to running in 1968 until late in 1967, so it is reasonable for him to remain retired from politics.

Nelson Rockefeller really only moved into the race after Romney's campaign imploded, so as you stated avoid the brainwashing gaffe, and the Moderates should be secure behind George.

However if Nixon is not running I would assume that quite a few of those who did not run for the Republican nomination are bound to run in this scenario. However I am not sure who those individuals would be. Maybe Claude Kirk or Peter Dominick.

Chuck Percy, but he can't get conservative votes. Kirk or Dominick are also possibilities, and they'll have trouble with centrists and liberals. Unlike his son, George won't be willing to make necessary political adjustments in pursuit of the WH... but if conservatives are sufficiently splintered he could win the nomination thanks to a united moderate/liberal bloc.

GE: He would have to trim his sails on race, otherwise it goes to the HoR where the Dixiecrats will elect whoever first succumbs to their blackmail. Probably carries some NE/Midwest states that Nixon didn't IOTL. Definitely MI, maybe PA, but loses a few Southern states. Doubtful he can crack much more than 300 EV. This is only in a race with HHH though- I don't think George Romney could beat RFK, and the 1967 trial heats (where he trailed by double digits) didn't either.
