AH Challenge: Planes still hit, but the WTC stand.

You'd have to redesign and re-engineer both buildings, though as they were, they were designed to withstand impacts from 737s... though the architects must not have taken fuel fires into account.

As you point out, it'd be just about impossible for those particular flights to crash into the WTC and leave the buildings standing. But perhaps, if planes nearly empty of fuel crashed into them it'd be possible. Hijacked planes from Hawaii?

How is it possible for American Flight 11 and United Flight 175 to still crash into The World Trade Center, however the Towers do not collaspe?

What if one of the planes had hit the corner of the building instead? Would this have resulted in only a part of the building collapsing? (like a tree being cut down?) As the destuction would be to only one corner and not so much through the central space.

What about a hit in much higher Etages? Means evan if the Upper Floors Collapsing, that there isn't such a high pressure on the Lower floors?

I doubt the WTC was designed to withstand 737's;
the WTC was designed early '60s, while the 737 didn't fly for the first time untill '67.

Sigh.. when designing it, the prospect of an aircraft colliding with it was taken into account, and the buildings were engineered to withstand it.

You know what I mean! Jet airliners.

From what I understand of the collapse and destruction of both buildings; the planes would either have to be smaller, somehow not knock out the central core of the building which had all the supports, and have little fuel on board. The WTC was doomed by the impact.

Maybe the question should be what happens if the planes miss and simply crash into NYC.

If the planes merely miss and crash in the city then until the second strike then most people will assume that the first was an accident. I doubt any actual witnesses thought the first plane to hit was an accident. Even the news miedia might of thought the second was an accident until the FAA or NORAD could get the word out. Even then I think there was a lot of confusion that morning along with disbelief. I remember listening to the radio at work and the word at first was a small commuter or business jet had hit the north tower. And the news media was treating as an accident until just before the second tower was hit
