Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to have America be more progressive in the European(read: Dutch) social-democrat/liberal sense of the word.

Certain elements I'd like to see:
1) Marihuana and other soft drugs like mushrooms legalized in most states if not all by 1999.
2) Light alcoholic beverages can be bought from age 16 and stronger alcoholic drinks from age 18 in most states by 2002.
3) Prostitution must be legalized, regulated and taxed by the year 2005 in the majority of US states with a minority using a "tolerance policy" and pornographic material must be accessible from age 18 in all US states. Prostitution can remain slightly taboo, but is accepted as a profession (even with its own labor unions).
4) Education must have a strongly secular position. Sex education and teaching the evolution theory must be compulsory (abstinence will be taught in a separate course on religion/philosophy/politics which discusses all major religions, philosophies and political currents on the world extensively, same for Creationism)
5) Passive euthanasia must be legal in most states and active euthanasia must be a discussion topic on the way to legalization in at least five states by 2005.
6) Abortion must be legal by 1960.
7) The government is highly secular with Tea Party like organisations remaining mostly insignificant fringe movements which are replaced by mainstream 'christian democrat' or 'christian socialist' groups.

PODs before 1900 are allowed if necessary.

Note: this is an AHC, so I don't want a political debate/flamewar here.
