OK, during the ACW, there were a fair few leaders on both sides, both political & military, from minority backgrounds, such as
Brig Gen Stand Watie, CSA- Cherokee Mounted Rifles chief & last CS general to surrender in 1865
Brig Gen Samuel Ely Parker, USA- Seneca, Grant's adjutant & chief of engineers
Judah Benjamin, CSA- Jewish Confederate Attorney-General
Adm David Farragut, USN- Spanish-American 1st full admiral in USN, victor of Battle of Mobile Bay
Gen PGT Beauregard, CSA- Creole general from New Orleans, 1st prominent Confederate general during the ACW for winning at 1st Bull Run
Mag Gen Franz Sigel, USA- prominent most high-ranking German immigrant who politically rallied German immigrants for Lincoln & commander of the German-American XI Corps in the AOP
Now, what about more such minority-background high-ranking ppl on both sides during the ACW ? Who could have been the most likely candidates ? How about a Jewish person of a similar position in the Union to what Judah Benjamin was to the Confederacy ? How about say a Tejano military leader of similar stature to Beauregard ? Or perhaps if Garibaldi had actually come over to fight for the Union in 1861, as another immigrant equivalent to Sigel ?
