The "free market" conservatism of Reagan and Thatcher didn’t seem to do particularly well in Europe until fairly recently (Italy and Berlusconi). Centre-right regimes are more common here and it is true that they - and indeed nominally left-of- center parties - have been influenced by ideas like privatization. It is also true that neither Thatcher nor Reagan could *in practice* be quite the anti-welfare-state pro-free-market purists some of their (mostly American) admirers claim them to be.
Nevertheless, it does seem to me that there is a difference at least in principle between Reaganite-Thatcherite conservatism and the kind that prevails in continental Europe's conservative and Christian Democratic parties. (The idiotic anti-immigrant extreme right is another matter altogether.)
So the question is: what is the most likely POD for a German or French "Reagan" or "Thatcher"?
