AH Challenge: Monroe Doctrine in WWII

Your challenge is to have the United States' Monroe Doctrine cause its involvement in the Second World War. Create any PODs you deem necessary, but the infringement of the Doctrine by a European power has to be a large one, and not just the Germans using U-Boats in the Caribbean or something.

So it has to be a European power, and not, say, Japanese conquest of South America? (I'm not sure how that would work, I'm just asking)

The Germans attempt to use Vichy Caribbean territory as U-Boat bases.
Hannibal did say "no U-boats in the Caribbean or something".

Germany being involved in an Argentina-Brazil war would do it- but why would they do so?
I think Argentina is the most likely place for Germany to become involved- maybe something involving the Battle of the River Plate?

There's a big difference between sailing a few U-boats into the Caribbean and building a base on Vichy islands from which to operate U-boats. I think if the Germans had attempted to use the French islands as bases, it could have triggered a response based on the Monroe Doctrine, which specifically states that the United States would oppose any transfer of European territory in the Western Hemisphere from one European nation to another.

Yeah, some sort of "Cuban Missile Crisis", only on Guadeloupe or something. The Germans 'ask' Vichy for permission to base U-boats and recon aircraft out of Pointe-A-Pitre, and send along a battalion of troops and fighters to protect the base. That will probably get an interesting response from the US, all right... that's within escorted bomber range of Puerto Rico. I predict a preview of Pacific island warfare.
