AH Challenge: Make Slovenia a North Korea-like Dictatorship

So I look at a map of Europe, and my eyes settle on Slovenia, looking all small and peaceful and (relatively) wealthy, and I gain this sudden urge to destroy it. So, my question is, with a POD after May 4, 1980 (the death of Tito), how can Slovenia end up as a North Korea-like dictatorship (it doesn't have to be Communist, though that could be the easiest way). Slovenia has to be an independent or de facto independent state ruled by Slovenians, not Croatians or Serbians, and the POD rules out Nazis. Other than that, go for it.

This is a tough task (Slovenia is actually most "Non-Balkan" out of all Yugoslavian republic, meaning very weak tradition of either statehood or blood feuds). However, if one is absolutely desperate, the POD should be before Dec. 1979 (death of Kardelj). This is the guy who, if survived long enough, could turn Slovenia into his own little personal kingdom.

No idea how to make this happen, but it would be extra awesome if this guy ended up as dictator; imagine the potential for his UN speeches :D

YOU READ MY MIND.

:D:D:D:D

On visiting Brazil, he once commented, "I despise carnaval! All that dancing and freedom. No! I am a communist. If I were in charge, carnival would be everyone marching in unison."

Pity, though, he ran in the '90s as a Social Democrat. Not an evil Commie by half. ;)

God that'd be depressing.

I was there this summer. Gorgeous place, like someone was making up countries and decided to go for a ludicrous fusion of the good bits of Italy and Austria, then put it in the Balkans "for the irony."

Don't want to think about it.

I'm not sure ya really could, I mean once Yugoslavia falls apart, Western Europe, which Slovenia is a part, is'nt gonna allow a N. Koreaish like regime to continue in its midst.

how bout in 1991 ?

well, WI during the 1991 war, Slovenia had a higher population of ethnic Serbs & other non-Slovenes (OTL the Serb population ithere was tiny compared to Croatia & Bosnia, which was why the war there lasted as short as it did), plus a leader with dictatorial aspirations such as Slavoj Zizek, which leads to the creation of a neo-Marxist Slovenian state with the ethnic cleansing of all non-Slovenes ? WI somehow these nasty Slovenes were able to, despite the JNA's overall superiority, & if they'd somehow secretly armed to the teeth well beforehand, hold on such that Belgrade recognised their independence plus had no choice to de facto acknowledge the dictatorital regime of Slavoj Zizek ?

Simply impossibile, even the ambitious Kardelj was a political and economic reformer, and both Italy and Austria / Germany had huge political interests in Slovenia ...

That last bit would make it more likely. If they do have a very powerful leader similar to Kim Il-sung, then those "huge interests" will mean they need to tread the path of Songun in order to maintain independence.

Not likely to happen in view of the fact that its big neighbor to the north is Austria and to the west Italy. Area was dominated by Austria for much of its existence.
