AH Challenge: make Mexico a Superpower

Can't think of an 1820 POD. After 1820...Well I suppose if they beat Texas in the revolution but thats just ASB:D

Well, if you play around with the Mexican War of Indepence and/or the Constitution of 1824, you have a good chance of avoiding the Texas Revolution. Avoid the troubles of the 1830s and Mexico will have a much easier time defending its northern territories from the USA. Stir in some friendlier immigrant policies and Mexico has a pretty good shot of competing alongside the USA. Doubly so since they will have tons more oil than the Anglos. For good measure, you can mix in a successful secession movement in the USA, if you really feel the need.

I beleive in For Want of A Nail's United States of Mexico stretches from Alaska to Panama.

A different constitution maybe one which is tolerant of non-Catholics, but more important larger European immigration especially to the north. If they could fill up Texas and California up with European immigrants USA would be less likely to conquer it. Maybe if these immigrants found gold in California in the early 1830ties, which could result in a larger population there by 1845.

I'd say discovery of gold and silver in California and Nevada after independence creating greater wealth among the poor and leading to political reforms would be a good start.

Basically the challenge would be to create a stable and liberal society which attract and assimilate immigrants.

yeah a little, but I was thinking that Mexico and Canada share the same border and Mexico controlling the rest of North America only leaving Canada, USA, and Mexico

Mexico for the win:D

Interesting. I was thinking of something similar for a TL but abandoned it for practicality reasons. I'd like to see someone do a TL for this.

Well lets see, Mexico gets its act together starting from Independence. Becomes a beacon of liberalism and tolerance and take in massive numbers of European immigrants following the Revolutions of 1848 and Irish Potato Famine.

Gets wealthy enough to buy itself a large Minie ball equipped army and win the Mexican-American War, expanding northward. Backs Southern secessionists and splits the US. Go to war with Spain and take Cuba and The Philippines. Conquers Central America, build Panama Canal.

Far fetched enough? ;)

Finding gold might make things worse in the long run. It gives you quick cash that you can use to cover up problems instead of making very needed reforms.
