AH challenge: make America a 3rd world nation... post WWII

How exactly is anyone's selection of unpopular presidents going to ruin the country? Please explain...

Every single one of them was a malevolent ASB in disguise.

American ideas of firm leadership are so charming considering how well the country does even with mediocre leaders.

The only way I can see America being a Third World country..is that they are on the loosing side of WW2 and was invaded/fought hard/occupied circumstances.

My thoughts

Goldwater would have been a good president :(

Regardless, here is a POD: The Democratic Convention in 1948 rejects Truman, some suggest nominating Humphrey, but there are murmurs of a potential southern walk-out over that. A compromise candidate is selected...Dwight Eisenhower. He is assigned Carter Glass as the Democratic VP nominee. Eisenhower and Glass go on to trounce Dewey and Warren in the presidential elecion. Unfortunately for the country, Puero Rican militants kill president Eisenhower in 1950; Glass is president.

F. Roosevelt 1933-1945
H. Truman 1945-1949
D. Eisenhower 1949-1950
C. Glass 1950-1961
L. Johnson 1961-1969
J. Rhodes 1969-1973
G. McGovern 1973-1981
E. McCarthy 1981-1989
R. Paul 1989-1997
R. Nader 1997-2005
D. Kucinich 2005-present

You could go the Red Dwarf way. Kennedy doesn't get assassinated but gets involved with a mob boss's girl. The scandal rocks the country and he gets impeached. J. Edgar Hoover is forced to run by the mob (which is blackmailing him with pictures of Hoover in drag at a gay club) and wins. Later he's forced to allow the Soviets to put nuclear missiles in Cuba in exchange for trade rights in drugs. With active Soviet missiles so close to the US, people flee the major cities/country in droves, and the economy crumbles.

Best episode of the whole damn show.

Kennedy was the 2nd gunman on the grassy knoll.

the POD must be after September 2, September is after Auguest,

Indeed it is, hence my objection. A September '45 PoD calling for no nukes ignores nukes already having been used, and thus contradicts itself. To have no nukes, the POD must be before they've been used, not after...

I think black angel meant that no nukes could be used after the suggested point of divergence.

Can stronger opposition to the Civil Rights movement in the Sixties produce a second Civil War?
The - Long Hot Summer - lasts several years. [ie Race War]

Personally I don't believe in the Race war scenario -- but it may be a POD capable of producing the necessary destruction.
