AH Challenge: Let's make a realistic Code Geass timeline!

I'm a big, big fan of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. I watched the whole series in Japanese with the subtitles, watched it again in English, etc. The show is great. Its got realistic characters, a good plot, but it's really, really lacking in the Alternate History department that actually serves as a crucical part of the story.

Take the timeline that's been revealed so far from the series and related materials, like the light novels, manga, whathaveyou for example. Its a big, big AH headache, to say the least. The change in calendars, for example, is horribly off.

After a certain point, they seem to integrate them with dates from OTL, which doesn't make sense, considering that the a.t.b. (Ascension Throne Britannia) calendar starts 55 years before the AD calendar. For example, they assume that because the American Revolution happened in the 1770s AD, it would also assume in the 1770s a.t.b., complete with toddler versions of Washington, Jefferson, and Adams. Ugh. Its a mess.

So, in light of all of this horribly confusing, ASB timeline, I present the members of AH.com with this simple challenge--somehow, make it at least realistic. In that realistic shift, however, we do want to maintain some semblence of the original timeline--namely, the nations and the technologies (minus the Knightmare frames...those we could probably see sacrificed) that exist in the story should exist in a more realistic time line to the extent that its plausible for them to. ASB elements, such as the immortal C.C., the 'gods', the Geass cult, whathaveyou, should be left out entirely, unless there's some way to explain them scientifically (which I doubt).

That Prince would then have the wealthiest, most populous, and most industrialized (such as it were) state in the Americas. The French holdings were indefensible and would rapidly fall, making the state inassailable from the Old World. Then give it a few centuries and I can see a Western Hemisphere spanning superpower.

IMO the entire Code Geass thing is just outright ASB. But this scenario seems to be the most likely way of making this thing realistic.

Hi.... I'm actually a fan of Code Geass and is new to this site... I'm actually happy that there is an AH thread about this... Though I'm sad that no one has done an AH about Code Geass that is more realistic than the cannon version.... I know that the anime has been around for a long time but it's just like you know... Maybe we can work something out of this...

I even got ideas now of reducing the "ASBisness" of Code Geass into something more realistic in AH standards.... I don't know if you're still interested in doing this... And I'm even wondering if we are going to have an audience for this... But It would be interesting... Especially that I'm thinking of making a scenario where our more realistic Code Geass parallel reality, through some mysterious event related to Geass, will meet a parallel counterpart that has Eurofed's United States of the Americas and Oceania on it...

Something like you go into North Pole.. travel more northward... and rather going into Siberia... you will go to the borders of Eurofed's realistic Ameriwank USA... with a Geass and sakuradite twist in the year 1961 (using a more realistic a.t.b. calendar dating back from Julius Caesar's SECOND invasion of Britain from OTL where rather than Eowyn, you have OTL's Cassivelaunus...

). The same thing happens in travelling in South Pole... rather than going to Britannian South America from CG's Australia (which is not clear if someone's living there...

).... You will have US Australia... Hahaha... But the world still looks circular from outer space and it's just that things fall into place perfectly.... whatever... I still can't tell you my other ideas unless we started talking you know...

So just let me know what do you think... Ok?

For the Political setup for Code Geass to be plausible (and I think it is within the realms of plausibility , with the right set of divergence) , three wanks are needed . One is a United Kingdom of America wank , where Britain , or an offshoot of the British royal family based in America establishes an empire spanning both Americas in the wake of the collapse of the Spanish New World Empire .

The second is a French wank that revolves France establishing hegemony across all of Europe . Everything has to go right for the Napoleon esque analogue here . This includes a French conquest of Britain , or it's inclusion into a European wide empire via dynastic ties , ala Hapsburg style.

The third is probably the most difficult , and complex of wanks . Essentially , take Superpower Empire esque China , and an alternate India where no single foreign power dominates India , and where British India , does not exist . Have a world war II analogue that results in China establishing it's dominance throughout the whole of East and South Asia.

Add in a surviving Ottoman Empire on 1914 boundaries , an independent Japan serving as a second rate power - whose survival is a product of a Great Game in the Pacific (in a world of colossal Super-states of Euro , America/Holy Britannian Empire , and Superpower China leading a so called "federation" in Asia ); and the stage is set for a political set up mirroring to Code Geass.

If you want to be even more liberal , throw in Minovsky Physics , and a hypothetical substance in an alternate universe called Sakuradite , and you get Code Geass.

And then , America conquers Japan , disturbs the global equilibrium/ belle epoche among the three Super States, and unleashes another major World War.

In my opinion, the most significant parts of the historical background in Code Geass are:
- electrical technology being more important than gunpowder technology
- The residents of British isles (and then Britannia) being a Anglicized (or other continental culture-ized) monarchy of Celtic superchiefs that resisted the Romans
- Most of Europe experiencing popular revolutions in the 1880's (the EU wasn't founded by Napoleon conquering, the official material I've read suggested that Napoleon was the top general of the national revolutions for democracy or whatnot that broke out all over the continent, from Russia to even across the channel in England)

The divergence to create a still Celtic dominated kingdom of the British Isles will butterfly everything else different, so I'll use not-(name) to imply similar/parallel situations with completely new ATL people.

A democratic movement in Europe in the 1800's, general Not-Bonaparte, celtoBrit colonies in North America, and the monarchy relocating to escape the revolution, all are fine.

From there, it's sensible that a history of common revolution would lead to, as the revolutionary states ally to topple the remaining monarchies in Europe, a not-EU type structure earlier on.

And all you need is the altered situation in Europe (the POD being a repelling of the Romans from their attempts to conquer Britain, if you remember) to give a altered Chinese imperial dynasty the time and free hand to be the one that creates a colonial Empire in India and Southeast Asia.

Japan's history might be a problem - but I guess we can assume there is still unification, an imperial dynasty is formed...but is the devolution of power to daimyos and then the rise of the samurai caste, the warring states, a shogunate, and an imperial restoration still inevitable or even possible?

I suppose the geography of Japan and nature of rice-feudalism probably encourages division for a while....

Any path that leads to a 20th century republic or constitutional monarchy with almost no monarchy at all like in OTL is fine; and leaving out getting beat in a WWII analog probably fits the show's militarized Japan. Japan before the invasion is depicted as armed, a regular country without a shameful past, but primarily a regular democratic and modern country.

A realistic Code Geass TL would be a good idea to establish here. However, my version of the Code Geass TL would involve two wanks, a UK wank and a Russia wank. I might use elements from 'The Bear Migrates to the Pacific' to create a suitable Geass TL that also involves Russia as a major player.

I kinda didn't like the canon Geass TL where Russia was an integral part of Britannia, hence my reason for trying to create a suitable TL with Britannia and Russia's history.

This is my proposed Geass TL with multiple great powers:

Britannia (compasses all of the American continents, North and South)
European Union (traditional EU territories minus the Russian dominated territory)
Soviet Union (first incarnation, then restored Russian Empire, and then a second incarnation with all the nationalistic, Stalinist trappings. Unsure if Moscow or Novgorod would be the capital)
China (Ming Dynasty sized China, but it could also become the PRC)
India (Without Pakistan)
Ottoman Empire (OTL Ottoman Empire without Balkans, but with North Africa)
Australia (my version of OTL USA, but with Indonesia as its integral part)


But this is just my proposed TL, and may not have to do with the proposed project as a whole, but you are free to give out ideas.

The Australian government even offered the United States to establish two or three military installations within its territory which President Kodama already accepted, totally destroying Britannian dreams of conquering the “Fortress Australia”. The United States is happy of the fact of meeting a country like Republican Australia and the two countries immediately sought to establish close relations with each other, which even included now a declared intention for the Republic of Australia in applying for protectorate status under the United States. Australia is the first country from the “Other Earth” that might join the United States and is now receiving overwhelming support from their counterpart Australian states and also from Washington.[/FONT]

I see. My Geass TL involved intertwining Britannia's history with Russia. I had an idea where Eowyn's descendant meets the founder of Kievan Rus, Rurik and forms a hostile relationship. Plus one of the future Knights of the Round battling Alexander Nevsky, and finally, Ivan the Terrible's reaction to Henry IX's birth. I'd still have the USSR exist in my TL, though it would be separate from the EU.

I've seen something like this...., in fanfiction.net, where there is an existing Soviet Union balancing with the Holy Britannian Empire..., but it involved some time travelling Soviets who wants to remove the United States in history... And turned out to intervene in Julius Caesar's invasion.... And went back... surprised that it was just replaced by another USA... but a polar opposite... They even carved out Japan with its northern part (Hokkaido and northern Honshu) becoming Communist and the southern part as Area 11... Tokyo is sort of an international zone... something like that....

by the way, is this TL already complete? Have you published parts of it somewhere... fanfiction.net or here in alternatehistory.com....

I always love the American-Russian rivalries... in whatever form.... So Rurik has Geass then... through Eowyn's descendant, which is not pure Celtic anymore of course.... But Ukraine and England are far away... And it's Low Middle Ages... How is it possible?

I'm thinking that Geass has just spread out only by the time that CC founded the Geass cult.... Only people with the Code can give contracts... So I don't know who gave VV his Code... 2 people with the Code already... CC and an unknown other... Two lines through the centuries... All the people they ended up giving contracts with didn't fulfilled their agreements ... Something implausible all of the sudden... I'm thinking that CC most probably gave Napoleon a Geass... Napoleon didn't succeed of course... as George Washington also... Haay...

I like the idea of a Sino-Anglo-Soviet-Euro balance in your world... And its quite polarized... then enters the "Great Merge" when a different ISOT event happened... The planet doubled in size... Time zones went different... But the ecosystem adjusted to the merge quickly... The dividing line between the two Earths will be the Atlantic Oceans (there are 2 Atlantics)... East of the Britannian Americas lies a whole new world... The US world... Then east of the US Americas in the other Atlantic lies the CG world... Of course it's a smooth ISOT... Hehehe...

That was actually my fic, but a crossover with Command and Conquer: Red Alert series. I'm actually rewriting the entire series simply because it sucked the first time. My rewrite does involve a Soviet Union, but this time it would act more like OZ from Gundam Wing. Rurik may get the Geass or Nevsky, but Rurik's not descended from Eowyn. Hence the quote from my OC. "The Houses of Gedimin, Rurik and Genghis Khan are most accepted in Russia. To have the House of Eowyn pollute our bloodline would be far more sacrilegious than allowing a heretical cult to exist in our Motherland."

I'm thinking about redoing the TL as well, but I don't know where to put it. I'm also going to incorporate most of 'The Bear Migrates to the Pacific' elements, only I should start the PoD with Yermak's expedition. Of course, after my rewritten fanfic is done, I would add in a Star Trek element (the Multiverse Time Portal), but cover the entire Gundam series.

So the Philippines that I"m living in right now would not be dominantly Catholic but would be on an Orthodox-Catholic mix of northern populations... but with still a Muslim South... Anyway, the Philippines is fairly multicultural and multiracial (The Malay blood dominant in the veins of most of us; but not purely Malay anymore... with tons of East Asian immigrants and mestizos through the centuries.. I myself has Chinese, Aboriginal and mestizo ancestors...) Sounds to me...

The Khanate of Tondo..., sounded good to the ears...,

A realistic Code Geass TL would be a good idea to establish here. However, my version of the Code Geass TL would involve two wanks, a UK wank and a Russia wank. I might use elements from 'The Bear Migrates to the Pacific' to create a suitable Geass TL that also involves Russia as a major player.

I kinda didn't like the canon Geass TL where Russia was an integral part of Britannia, hence my reason for trying to create a suitable TL with Britannia and Russia's history.

This is my proposed Geass TL with multiple great powers:

Britannia (compasses all of the American continents, North and South)
European Union (traditional EU territories minus the Russian dominated territory)
Soviet Union (first incarnation, then restored Russian Empire, and then a second incarnation with all the nationalistic, Stalinist trappings. Unsure if Moscow or Novgorod would be the capital)
China (Ming Dynasty sized China, but it could also become the PRC)
India (Without Pakistan)
Ottoman Empire (OTL Ottoman Empire without Balkans, but with North Africa)
Australia (my version of OTL USA, but with Indonesia as its integral part)


But this is just my proposed TL, and may not have to do with the proposed project as a whole, but you are free to give out ideas.

To have the EU around here..., I suggest that you use the "Vive La Revolution" timeline by Aranfan where Napoleon Bonaparte reestablished the Roman Empire... but replaced it with a democratic-authoritarian hybrid system called the European Union... since Napoleon would be influenced by a Benjamin Franklin, the Earl of Pennsylvania, staying in France and met the young general and bringing in the ideals of the dead George Washington and the failed American Revolution since he really regretted accepting the bribe of the Prince of England, not a Duke of Britannia if Britannia is going to have a King or Queen as in Code Geass Megiddo fanfic. The Washington Rebellion is considered a democratic reincarnation of failed English Civil War (strengthening the surviving Tudor absolute monarchy) and Glorious Revolution (an attempt of a parliamentary Dutch Republic to take over absolutist England) in the Americas..., it fits in perfectly...

C.C. would soon met the general in Italy and gave him Geass.... Making the Humiliation of Edinburgh a possibility... Napoleon would still be defeated in the Battle of Waterloo, but in 1814, and the Congress of Vienna will reorganize the European Union into a more decentralized pattern that would become increasingly democratic throughout the 19th century... Napoleon will be poisoned as in cannon but it is going to be in Elba....

The Middle Eastern Federation of the cannon would fit in as a democratic reorganization of the Ottoman Empire, making it be renamed as the Ottoman Federation.... Just remove Egypt and North Africa in the process.. As well as Constantinople for your Russian Empire...

The Chinese Empire (without Mongolia and Manchuria) and a liberated India without Pakistan, if Pakistan is going to be Soviet (from the French, Portuguese, British and the Russians, not just the British) could form the Asian Confederation.... Bring Southeast Asia into the Confederation... The Confederation is Chinese dominated as expected and this Confederation could be form as a result of a "War of the Orient"....

Japan, with its sakuradite resources, will be agreed by the major powers as a buffer state.... And this Japan will not become fully isolationistic in its Tokugawa times... It will be semi-isolationistic and remain as it is, even if its laws of travel would be relaxed.... The Shogunate could remain in some form... but Japan is going to be the Imperial Shogunate of Japan... with militaristic-democratic elements...

About your USSR; how could there be a first incarnation? then make it fall for a restored Russian Empire? then make that empire fall for a second incarnation?.... I'm thinking of just make the Russian Empire turn into Communism... with Russian characteristics... , Hence the reorganization of the "Imperial" Russian Empire to a "Soviet Russian Empire".... with a monarchy that supported communism.... but not in power of course... Hehehe...

SO THE WORLD IS TRIPOLAR... with the HBR, SRE and the EU... Australia is a powerful nation because of how it turned its deserts into green areas... (TTL has ASB's enough for this to be made to happen right? ) as this world's USA... You could just turn Southeast Asia as Australian dominated economically... Fall of 1st USSR: Second Russian Civil War breaks out, Red Army Generals defect to White side and help the emigre White Army topple Stalin's regime and restore the Russian Empire with Tsar Alexander (not OTL Alexander I, more like Romanov from RA2)

Fall of 2nd Russian Empire: Holy Britannian Empire invades Russian Empire, kills the Tsar and enacts a brutal, genocidal policy against all inhabitants of the Russian Empire. One charismatic ex-Tsarevich leads the Russians into war against Britannia and founds the second USSR, but with a fascist and nationalistic spirit before having an ideological divide, which the fascists would fall and the second USSR would transition into a democratic society, with its leaders examining the causes of their Rodina's descent into the fascist abyss. I'm also including elements from my own thread, "The Bear Migrates to the Pacific", with the part of Russian Philippines, plus parts of Malaysia and Indonesia that hasn't fallen to Australian rule. It does need parts of Indonesia as a buffer zone against the Confederation and Australia. (I called it the Grand Duchy of Beringia after Vitus Bering, and it would change its name to Tondo Soviet Sovereign/Socialist Republic. Tondostan may also be a suitable name, as would Rizalistan after a different Rizal from OTL Jose Rizal) On the other hand, the second USSR may have to absorb most of the Balkans to secure Constantinople. I also forgot that in my thread, Alaska is also included in the Soviet periphery as well.

Australia would have the giant island of New Guinea under its rule, as well as parts of Indonesia that didn't fall under Soviet rule. New Zealand would be taken away from Britannia. Australia would be settled by Britannians against the monarchy.

The EU, yeah I may take the idea from Aranfan's Viva La Revolution. The Ottoman Federation may have to include Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. What of Germany? Should it have OTL Kaiserreich German Empire, or like modern day OTL borders? I'm not sure if the second USSR would have a Warsaw-Pact with other nations or something.

One final question: I know that the TL that I'm doing is my fic, but do you think a Christian Golden Horde would be a perfect fit for a Russo-Tatar-Mongol state? Nevsky could use Geass to foresee Sartak's early death by Berke and influence events that would have Berke poisoned instead of Sartak. Sartak would then encourage his subjects to convert to Orthodoxy or simply increase the Nestorian conversion. I'm not sure if Orthodoxy and Nestorian Christianity would be a good mix or not, but if it's possible, I need advice on how Orthodoxy and Nestorianism would intermingle without any bad results.
