AH Challenge: Land war in Australia!

Here are a couple of takes on this, although both are ASB.

1.) The people of Western Australia take their secession seriously enough in the 1930's to fight for it. After the British government brushes off their petition, they secede and form the Republic of Westralia. The Australian Army moves into Perth and Fremantle but face a long war against fighters in the outback. Joseph Lyons was liked well enough by the people, so he could possibly be somewhat Churchill-like.

2.) When Australia sends forces into East Timor in 2000, Indonesia goes nuts and attacks Darwin, holding it for a time in hopes of gaining concessions.

Something different than the Japanese invasion stuff.
