AH Challenge: Keep John C Calhoun a nationalist.

As a young man John C Calhoun was an American nationalist in favor of a strong federal Government.
In later life he of course became a States Rights proponent, supporter of nullification and Godfather of secession.

Challenge is to keep him on the original track.

Have him get into power and keep slave power dominant. His conversion to Federalism was largely due to the fact that the causes he opposed, such as tariff reforms and abolition, were gaining traction in the federal government. If his politics was more dominant in the federal government he's be more comfortable with a strong federal government.

Yes, but he changed his views as well. He had been a Warhawk in 1812 and opposed the Mexican War. He also opposed war over Oregan.
