AH Challenge: Independent Haida Gwaii Islands

Seeing as alot of AH tends to be focused on a relatively limited area I've decided to do this.

Your challenge is to create an independent nation comprised of the Haida Gwaii islands (Queen Charlotte islands).

-It does'nt need to have either of the above names.
-It must be a European descended state, that is it can't be a native state, though it could be populated by Amerindians.
-It can comprise other territory, but must be primarily based on the islands.

Undecided POD in the late 17th/early 18th Century leads to greater (doesn't really have to be that much greater) Russian interest in North America. A small monastic community is established on *Graham Island. The native Haida are converted and partially Russified. Some Russian colonists arrive.

The islands eventually fall under British sovereignty as part of *British Colombia, but remain culturally distinct from the rest of *BC. Later (if TTL roughly follows OTL, say the mid to late 20th Century), the islands peaceably separate from *BC/*Canada/Whateverland.

Interesting. I'm guessing it has a strong influence from the Orthodox monks that live they're? Otherwise it might be difficult to make them feel separate enough to want to be independent.

I think it might be easier to run a scenario like that above, but with the addition of having Canada collapsing/ruled by a dictatorship/being generally unlikable, so they have a better reason to split.

I had a Pennsylvania Dutch / Amish analogue in mind, but more geographically, linguistically, and politically isolated.

That could work too, but I don't think it has to go that far. I was thinking more of a 'we don't need your English-speaking, modern, secular, industrial (and so on) state'. Perhaps anger over a draft imposed for a *WWI? Given the small population of the island, you wouldn't have to draft too many boys before the residents fear their entire culture could be wiped out.

https://www.alternatehistory.com/discussion/showthread.php?t=137328 My TL. Basicly earlier on, harsher little ice age, forces the Haida and other PNW natives to unite and head southward to Vancouver....for now.
