AH Challenge: Have the Warsaw Pact go to war with NATO.

The time is right after the Hungarian Revoultion was crushed. But, that is where I want you guys to come in. I want you guys to think of any way that the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact countries can find some way to declare war on NATO. Again, sorry if I fragged up on this one as well. I'm really out of the loop...:(:( Also, if they go to war who will win? Thier are no nukes allowed so one can not say ' nukes, everybody loses'.

If you want no nukes in such a war shortly after the Hungarian Revolution, you must move this thread to the ASB-section.

No nukes in the late 1950's? That's a tough sell even for me, and I'm one of the "nuclear threshold isn't as easy to cross as you think" people on this board.

An extension of WWII is a common no-nuke scenario but overlooks the fact that the USSR was running on fumes. Circa 1960's are more likely for no-nukes, ~1970's are right out (NATO CAN'T stop the WP with conventional weapons in that period), and ~1980's are the favored period for a no-nuke war.

A limited war is possible, but very difficult ... maybe Cuban Missiles crisis get hot and there are skirmishes in Europe ( Berlin, for example ) and Cuba itself, but somehow the fire does not extend completely and before nukes start flying there is a cease fire ... If the war last longer than several weeks the nukes start flying ... the west could not hope to stop the WP troops in the 50´s 60´s conventionally and they knew it ...
