AH Challenge: Have more European monarchies survive

Hey Guys,

Which European nations could you have that have stable monarchies in the modern day still without changing history too much?

This can include nations that may have a section of its land in Europe, while the rest is outside of Europe.

Simple, but remember, no drastic changes. Also just because I put this in 'After 1900' doesn't mean the POD has to be in the 1900's, it's just I think for history to not change too much you'd need it to be.

Portugal - pre or post Salazar restoration

Greece - Keep the Kings out of politics

Italy - Win the 1946 referendum

Malta - merge with UK or simply keep the Queen after 1974

Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary - Post Communist movements to restore the monarchies

Serbia - Royal house seen as a way to break with the post communist past

To change the rest of history as little as possible, I think you need PODs that happen in the countries in question themselves, and that are not strongly connected to events in other countries. That framework makes Portugal and Greece the best candidates, IMO. Those are the two countries where it seems that the events the caused the abolition of monarchy had very little to do with anything happening outside either country.

For monarchies to survive anywhere else, I think you'd need PODs that would alter or prevent both World Wars.

As silly as it may sound, what about bringing back the Kaiser in Germany like the French got lumped with the Bourbons again? Obviously as one where the monarch would have zero constitutional power, and just be ceremonial.

Avoid World War II and the Iron Curtain. This should spare Italy, Yugoslavia/Serbia, Romanian and Bulgaria from losing their monarchies. Hungary was officially a vacant monarchy, but I don't see them ever bringing the Habsburgs back.

Italy could easily hold on to its monarchy with only a little change in history.

Maybe a Turkish constitutional monarchy of some sort could appear after WW1? Sultan Ataturk I, anyone? :D

Italy, Greece, and Portugal are your best bets. Maybe some former Communist countries could bring back their monarchies to give their governments some legitimacy, but it'd be hard, since few of them had actual monarchs before the Communists took over. Yugoslavia, Romania, and Bulgaria are the only ones I can think of.
