If the POD was 1894, it could work. The idea there would be that there is a more plentiful harvest, but it goes past Baratieri. When you have the Battle of Adwa (or its ATL analogue) Menelik has an even more crushing victory. With plentiful supplies, he is able to march on Keren, Dogali, Asmara, and ulitmately Massawa (
Menelik's March to the Sea sounds like a good book). Italy rushes to peace, as they are so scared that Ethiopia somehow invading the peninsula seems plausible to some. Ethiopia is able to annex all of Eritrea, but allows the Italians to retain the port of Massawa, as he knows that if he completely strips Italy of its colony they will come back with a horrible vengance. France and Britain pull their borders back even further (after the end of the war in OTL they reduced their claims inland to appease Ethiopia, they
were quite scared). Regardless, Italy stays in the Triple Alliance during WWI, partially for vengance regardless, and Ethiopia invades Italian Somalia. After the war they gain the territory (Ethiopia, again lets Italy keep Massawa). After World War Two (which went a lot like OTL), British Somaliland and Djbouti are considered impractical as nations (largely due to Ethiopian inertia) and granted to Ethiopia.
The Somali populations have been throughly Ethiopianised and Orthodoxised, and thoses formerly in British Somaliland and Djbouti are easily indoctrinated in a generated by missionary schools. Ethiopia stands as a power able to exert influence over the newly independent African nations and project its power in East Africa and southern Arabia.
