AH Challenge: GM owned (or parceled up) by foreign companies

When the financial crisis hit, many people in Europe and especially in Germany had wet dreams about GM Europe bought off from GM as said company was in danger of becoming bankrupt. You see, Europeans in general and Germans in particular think that American cars are bullcrap, especially those from GM. Chrysler (bought up by Fiat in the meantime) has also been frowned upon while Ford has at least become an accepted car producer. People were rather surprised how fast GM came through Chapter 11 and that sale plans for GM Europe became obsolete.

At one point, I myself dreamt about GM parceled up into occupation zones like Germany after World War II, especially after Chrysler was bought by Fiat.
Of course, that was a pipedream. But how could such a scenario really happen? GM owned by foreign manufactorers?

All of it? Short of a bankruptcy that results in GM being declared unable to be re-organized (which is highly unlikely), the best one can do would be for several GM divisions to be sold off. The lead bidder for GM Europe was Magna, which is Canadian-based. They wanted Opel and Vauxhall. GM also began negotiations to sell Saturn and Pontiac, with the lead bidder there being Roger Penske, who is one of the largest auto dealers in the United States. Hummer's only bidder was a Chinese firm.

Truthfully, I can see Magna and Penske buyouts working. They would force the companies to work with GM for a while, until they got into the business with new cars for themselves. Magna would face a lot of pressure to get into the North American market rifle from Canada, so it would be fairly quick to have the three American auto makers growing to five.
