OK, during WWII, despite being the 1st black promoted to general rank in the US Army, Benjamin O. Davis Sr remained pretty much exclusively a special racial relations adviser to FDR & inpsector-general of black troops, due to the Army's Jim Crow glass ceiling against blacks commanding whites- although of course his own achievements enabled the subsequent rise of his son Ben Davis Jr to command the Tuskegee airmen in aerial combat over Europe, & future outstanding black military officers.

Now, how could Ben Davis Sr have been given a combat command in WWII, & with what effects ? As he was appointed GOC of a bde of the 2nd Cav Div in Jan 1941, WI somehow he was able to lead these Buffalo soldiers into combat- say in a successful relief expedition of the Philippines (a rumour which was heard about among the Battling Bastards of Bataan during the siege) ? Or WI he was given command of the 92nd BUFFALO Div instead of Ned Almond, to lead in combat in Italy ?
