AH Challenge: Get the USSR to intervene in the Korean War as well.

With a POD set in 1950, is their any way you can get The USSR to send a SHITLOAD of troops like China did? If say Russia DOES intervene, what will happen as a result? Will this lead to a even QUICKER end to the Korean War and does North Korean forces end up taking over South Korea in this scenario? Also, PM me if your interested in writing up a timeline of this with me .

Hmmm it's quite hard to get direct Russian involvement as they are so far away. They would have to come through China or the Yellow Sea (Not happening btw, the Yanks would splash those ships to the four winds).

What? The Soviet Union (and now Russia) is one of the three countries that the North Koreans have a land border with. How is that far away?

The bigger issue here is escalation and Stalin's personality, which this rather runs against. Stalin wasn't interested in getting into another major war so soon after World War 2... hell he barely gave Kim his okay with the North Korean attack as it was! The Soviets still had not recovered economically from the war and Stalin wanted to finish rebuilding the USSR and getting more atomic bombs before thinking about such violent clashes.

If the USSR gets seriously involved in Korea beyond the equipment they shipped them and the few pilots they slipped in with them, then the war is not going to remain in Korea. It will turn into World War 3 and that is something that Stalin does NOT want.

The Stalinist USSR has all of zero reason to push it in Korea. Supplying advisers and guns to the North Koreans was already pushing it considering that A. it was a war the communists started and B. it involved the US and her allies directly on the other side.

Soviet troops fighting NATO troops is a great way to ignite a geographically-important bushwar into the third world war, Stalin knew this, and he wasn't going to play that game.

Really with Stalin in charge there's no conceivable way to make it happen.

So, he had left the chineses act, saying probably something like 'they will do the job with huge numbers, AND the casualities will not be on us'?

Stalin and Truman didn't want WWIII but Truman had more balls to intervene at all. Stalin needs to be gone and even then, why wouldn't they have Mao do the dirty work?

The Soviets won't send troops directly, they did send a fair number of MiG pilots and helped provide logistics for the PRC "Volunteer" force. Unlike Hitler Stalin was smart enough to know when a war was too risky to begin and thus not begin it.
