AH Challenge: Earlier ends to the Cold War?

Your mission, should you choose to accept it: to end the Cold War before ours - whether one side declares victory, as the US did after 1989-91, or the divide simply dies down.

It should be noted that "Cold War Goes Hot" premises are not allowed here - use your common sense as to the application of this rule.

No PODs before... let's say June 22nd 1941, the beginning of Operation Barbarossa.

Well... Maybe more successful Soviet Union? Maybe if they reach even Paris, rebellions against the Soviets would be mnore common in later years. this can cut down the SU dead-end in like... 10-15 years.

Would detente count? Because there were quite a few cases where we were close but blew it.
Ike before the U2 Incident had gotten us rather close, and Kennedy was trying his hand at it before his assassination.

JFK has a second term and after withdrawing all US personnel from Vietnam, he has a summit with Khrushchev in Moscow and goes to China instead of Nixon (assuming Khruschev remains in power throughout the sixties and also no Cultural Revolution ever happens in China). Also there were plans to lift the embargo against Cuba and to restore ties with Castro.

During Detente, Nixon declared that the Cold War was over, and the U.S. and USSR completed several high-level joint projects, such as the Apollo-Soyuz Mission. Of course the Cold War wasn't really over, and the power blocs remained in place, but tensions were lower than they would be at any time until the late 80s. Detente could continue a bit longer if the Soviets don't invade Afghanistan.
