If you did some ridiculous butterflying (but not handwaving) and turned the Tory Party post-Macmillan into a party of straight-talking 'business thinkers' more akin to that element of the US Republican party today, by the 1980s 'our Denis' may well have emerged as the leader of a 'Man In The Street Tory' party, as opposed to the One Nation or Empire highbrow factions of the past.
