AH Challenge: Canadian Kennedys

How can we have the Kennedys in Canada with the role they had in the US? POD 1840's, when they immigrated OTL. In Canada we have an anti-dynastic politics, except Liberal ones :D. If you can have one elected PM by 1970, so much the better. Bonus if you can keep Liberals till 57'.

Well, if the Kennedys replace the Bronfmans as chief rum-runners, you could still get them to make lots of money to position themselves for a run in politics.

Does anyone have good sources for my first TL? I have many Kennedy books (Dallek, Schlesinger, Mutual Contempt, etc) but no Bronfman books.

Let's have some realism here please -- based on what I know about the OTL JFK and on what my learned Canadian AH.com brethren/comrads have taught me about Canadian politics, JFK (and I will presume that the butterflies here had flown w/surgical precision so that the JFK of TTL is quite similar to the JFK of OTL) would be a Progressive Conservative.

Prologue:

The crowds at Sparks and Dundas swelled to 50,000 people. The new leaders of Canada watched from the podium. Prime Minister John F. Kennedy, Deputy PM and Justice Minister Robert F. Kennedy, Health Minister Robert Stanfield, and behind the stage, party guru Dalton Camp goes over the final projections for the June 24, 1968 election.

Canadian federal election, 1968

PC: 167 seats- 48.2%
Liberals: 65 seats
Socred: 14 seats
NDP: 19 seats

looking at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Bronfman
and then the references there, you could try

You should also get your hands on a copy of James Gray's "Booze". Actually, anything by him is well written, researched and fun to read.

PS Dad grew up in Yorkton SK, near the MB border during the 30's, and it was apparently worth your life to inquire too much into Bronfman affairs...

Yes, as a Canadian Tory, I agree on JFK as a PC. Unfortunately RFK's OTL base is not what I consider Tory voting blocs in Canada, minorities and poor generally vote, until last October, for the Liberals and NDP. They are not natural conservatives, big or small-c.

Actually that's quite realistic, since I'm putting them in Montreal. Our city had the largest Irish population at the time, and is quite similar to Mass. Catholic majority state in predominantly Protestant country, a very *interesting* brand of politics, with huge clerical influence. Now when JPK and McConnell become rivals, which they will by the 30's, interesting effects...

It would be interesting to see what the butterflies of two of North America's most prominent left-wing political families intermarrying would be, especially if you could have a Kennedy Presidency and a Trudeau Prime Minstership happen at the same time.

No, we're keeping the Kennedys in Canada. Trudeau will be *taken care of* in an original manner...
