There is a nuclear war. The French government is destroyed and the survivors are peasant farmers under a local self-described noble. Eventually, one guy, Napolean VI, declares that he is the descendant of the King and with some bandits conquers several noble territories. By default, being the only one who claims the title, he is Emperor of France.

In 1940 as the Germans invade General Louis Bonaparte is made minister of War with Colonel De Gaulle as his Chief of Staff. After the French surrender, General Louis Bonaparte Leaves France and becomes the leader of the Free French.

In 1946 during the Reconstruction and writing of the new Constitution, Bonaparte is offered the Throne.

This might do it. I was a student at the Sorbonne one Bastille Day, I keep thinking why are you people celebrating the revolution, you really want a king. I thought that especially after I was thrown off the first class subway car. ( I had an economy ticket)
