AH Challenge: Balkanize Russia

What the title says. Preferably balkanize them before WWII. Also, explain the effects it would have on the ensuing world war.

Actually this technically happened after WW1 since the defeat of Russia caused several parts of the Empire to try to become independent with varying results. If I remember correctly, parts of the central Asia also declared themselves independent. However by the mid 1920's Russia or the USSR had basically reclaimed all but the Baltics, Finland, and Poland.
Now originally The Allies had intended to support several of these countries but lacked the means to do so. Now assuming that The Allies are able to keep the Soviets from reclaiming all that grey then the loss of so much territory would severely cripple the Soviet economy and industry as well as weaken Soviet agriculture since if I remember correctly Ukraine was basically the USSR's breadbasket and losing it would be very hard to replace.

Japan had designs on the region as well. Given their tendency to puppet countries rather than outright conquer, you could see a couple quasi-nations spring up if they jumped on the lumbering beast's back.

Which they might well, if all those nations remained independent.

I was thinking of maybe a failed or delayed October Revolution. I.e. Pitting Kornilov against Lennin and maybe throwing some others into the mix.

That could very well work to keep either the Whites or the Reds from moving into the Brest-Livorisk territory. Especially once these countries get well established.
