AH challenge: alternative institutions as most integrated sectors of US society

OK, it's traditionally acknowledged by historians that the armed forces & professional sports were by the 1950s/60s the most racially integrated sectors of US society, given their gradual common focus on rewarding & promoting ppl based on their efforts & ability as opposed to their race or other background. Now, what other institutions of US society could've poss arisen as alternative pioneers for racial integration by the time of the civil rights movement ?
