AH Challenge: A Pacific World War

Your challenge, if you choose to accept it, is to start, prosecute, and end a world war whose primary theater of operations is in the Pacific Ocean and the countries that have proximity to it. Bonus points if this war comes at the same time as OTL WWI or WWII.

Depends on whether one considers WWII in Europe/North Africa to be the same war as WWII in the Pacific or not...

If not... then there you go... ;)

Have it kick off after the Panay sinking, that's what Theodore did on Warships1.

I don't know if its possible, unless Japan can build a better naval capacity and not have a war with the US right at the same time as WWII.

China goes Communists early and nearly pushes Japan out with Soviet help. WWII is U.S, U.K, Japan, and Loyal India vs Soviet Union, China, and Rebel India. With the rest of Europe neutral, combat is focused on India and East Asia.

Hm, what about a modern Pacific War?

Did anyone say "Spratly Islands?"

I'll write up more tomorrow after my exam.

Well, you could have a German-American war break out. Whilst there would be an Atlantic 'front' the main actions, with landings etc, could be in the Pacific. This might go against the 'official' German war plans, but since those more or less presumed Franco-Russian neutrality, it could be that someone like Moltke refuses to release significant parts of the army for action in the N American theatre (fearing that France or Russia would take advantage and attack) so that the action ends up confined to the Pacific

Dreadnoughts in the Pacific.

In the 20's, the navies of Japan and the US viewed each other increasingly as the enemy, and while farfetched, one could perhaps imagine a mostly naval war between Japan and the US at this time. China and Russia could take advantage, and this might lead to a response from Europe, thus having your world war.
