Never like the habit of equating Indonesia with Java, saying this as a Javanese my self (not so pure though). Javanese hasn't so much of naval traditions compared to the Malays and Eastern Indonesians. Maybe they were the ones who built the largest empire in the region, but Javanese civilization was also the most conventional civilization among Indonesians. Thanks to seafaring Malay sailors from the Malacca strait region, Malay became the lingua franca of the archipelago, not Javanese. And Javanese weren't so often as the Bugis in exporting their men into becoming the reigning dynasties in the other islands.
