AH Challange: Australian/New Zealand Occupation Zone in Berlin.

Crazy isn't it :D. Anyways, the obvious POD is Australain and New Zealand Troops being used in D Day and the subsequent liberation of Europe and Drive to Berlin. But if this does happen, how could an Australain/New Zealand, or possibly an occupation zone for all the Commanwelath Realms (AUS,NZ,SA,CA) come about? Good luck

Well, Canadian troops were involved on D-Day (Juno Beach) and later liberated the Netherlands. But not even they got an occupation zone in Germany. So I don't see any reason why the Australians or the New Zealanders should get anything.

The only reason that the French got an occupation zone in German was at the insistances of Britain and America and the Soviets agree to it if that territory came out of the Anglo-American portion. Whatever portion of Berlin the Australian-New Zealand portion may be it would probably be carved out of Britain's portion. So in the end all things will remain relatively the same.

How about a joined Commonwealth area, maybe in the centre of Berlin as a sort of 'international' zone as opposed to a fully fledged occupation zone?

I'll just repeat my idea from the Canadian zone question some time ago:

The UK is conquered by the Germans but not before the government, royal family and much of the navy escape to one of the dominions. They end up settling in Australia. Australia becomes the de facto Britain of the Grand Alliance and thus receives an occupation zone after the defeat of Germany (probably later than 1945 if the UK has to be liberated).

None of the allies would agree to any area of Germany outside of an occupation zone. Hell the soviets would move in with the first time a bombed out house pulls down their white flag.

Err... I believe that's what the 'British' zone was. I remember back in the day in German class, being told that I as a Canadian had the rights of a member of one of the occupying powers (I don't remember what rights, but it was like visiting Germany or Berlin without a visa, or something.)

I don't know if the Aussies had the same rights, but I am sure Canada shared Britain's (which is why we didn't need our own occupation zone).

I think Canada and Australia certainly earned the right to have ampart in the administration of defeated Germany and Austria. Their contributions to the war effort were far more valuable than that of France, which only got an occupation zone because the British and Americans were being diplomatic. I think it would make more sense for Canada to get an occupation zone in Germany and Austria, and Australia to get an occupation zone in Japan.

By all means hate on the French if you must, but after 1942 Australia contributed about as many forces to the defeat of Nazi Germany as Rhodesia
or Newfoundland did.

Take away RAAF personnel serving with bomber command, coastal command & and a couple of squadrons in the Med, and there is basically no Australian commitment to fighting Nazi Germany or Fascist Italy after Alamein (our attention was on the Pacific by then).

The Free French, on the other hand, played a pivotal role in the march on Rome, in Operation Dragoon, and in the liberation of Paris.

hmmm, even if Australia had participated with ground troops for D-Day- ie if the 9th Div had been avail to land at Gold Beach, as Gen DeGuingand had opined, & if the 1st Australian Armd Div had been part of 21st Army Group's ORBAT instead of just sittin round in Australia- & the invasion of NW Europe, it would've been within thw wider context of the British military, which would've trumped any national considerations- as Voyager75 has pointed out with the Canadians.

btw, there were RAAF personnel also involved in the Berlin airlift- which is about the closest Australia or NZ would've come to havin a separate occupation zone in Berlin...

hmmm, as for an ANZAC occupation zone in Tokoyo- Australia DID have a major role with the British Cth occupation Force during 1945-51- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BCOF
