With a POD after 1945 can there be a Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia superstate until 1984???

From the novel we know that somethimes in the early 1950s there was a nuclear war with hundreds of nukes beeing dropped around the globe.

I would think the only way to get the three superstates into existence by 1984 is if the Korean war gets really hot. Mc Arthur uses nukes against the Chinese and as a result the Soviets bomb Europe and the US.

The Soviets conquer all of Europe except the British islands thus Eurasia is born.

The US conquers Britain and its colonies + South America as "protection" against Eurasia thus oceania emerges.

China manages to repell a Soviet invasion and conquers all its neighbours thus Eastasia is born.

Nice and frightening.

Personally, I'd modify that a tiny bit.

America wouldn't need to "conquer" the British territories, they would just assertively secure the lands you mentioned into alliances and from there the local autonomy of those "protected" affiliated nations would be whittled down in the name of centralized security and defense. Imagine otl NATO with even more American dominance, maybe otl Warsaw Pact-like.

Since this is way pre-Nixon, it's almost natural for China to grab "American Imperialist Outposts" like Japan for the sake of its own safety, and, what the hell, brutally subjugate Vietnam et al while they're at it.

I see numerous anecdotes with mid- or low-level officers at the cutting edge of these events being potentially interesting, maybe.

How awful this would be for the Japanese! Freshly conquered by the United States after a grueling war, then the American "caretakers" flee in the face of overwhelming Chinese onslaught, maybe a statement from MacArthur like "I shall return!" before leaving and the emperor stays behind and commits seppuku before submitting to PRC control. Horrific oppression, famine, etc.

an alarming set of thoughts, the United States savagely beaten back out of Europe and East Asia, and then aggressively consolidating with the rest of the world as a result, motivated to extreme behavior by the mushroom clouds in the back of the American mind.

I'm getting a spine-tingling vision of a black and white photograph of the weary, worn Eisenhower, MacArthur (with six stars!) and Hoover "troika" standing more or less together while reviewing a military parade.

In this tl, there's no 22nd amendment, and Eisenhower is compelled to remain president just to keep the profoundly disturbed others from taking control. Eisenhower fears he is the only civilian who can keep the overbearing "Supreme Commander" MacArthur and the paranoid bureaucrat Hoover from sweeping the last remnants of sane rule of law away.

When Ike dies in his fourth term, there is profoundly deep panic among the first to learn of it, a briefly-lived conspiracy to keep it secret...
