AH Bookreview: Alternation from Image Comics

Just picked the first two issues up today of an AH comic titled Alternation from Image Comics. Its an interesting cross of dinosaurs, zeppelins, steampunk, Confederacy gets revenge and whatnot. There are alot of historical individuals making an appearances. The timeline for the entire world hasn't be revealed yet, tho the interpretation of the various characters can be found at: www.alternationthecomic.com.

Basically, what I've figured out so far.

-The ACW goes on for years and reunified America is in bad shape.
-Gregory Rasputin becomes Prime Minister of Russia.
-King Ludwig II of Bavaria has become Emperor of the German Empire.
-Rasputin unites the German, Russian and Austro-Mexican Empire to rule the world.
-The Triple Alliance (as I'm calling them to save time writing) invades and conquers the United States - or most likely those territories east of the Mississippi [no real mention, but it appears that a map of the world will be availabe in some future issue].
-The non-occupied territories become Free America, headed by President Frederick Douglas in San Francisco.
-New Orleans is a free and neutral territory.
-Texas is also free and independent.

The Heroes of this story, rebels against the occupying Imperial German forces, are the Sons of Sam - Annie Oakley, Sam Clemens, Billy the Kid, Yoshinobo Tokugawa , Mata Hari and probably a few others. Edgar Allan Poe appears to be a Darth Vader sort of heavy for Ludwig.

Free America appears to be a West similar to Turtledove's "A Different Flesh" with Neanderthals and others walking around - as well as Giambastiani's Fallen Cloud Saga with the dinosaurs.

On the whole, it does look like an immense amount of fun for the non-scholarly Alternate Historian. Its the great grabbag of ATLs - and cross-ATLs - very much like the AH compilations edited by Martin Greenberg.

Look for it in your local comicbook store.

AH Rating: 4 hourglasses (out of a possible five) for the fun.
