In 1968 the Pakistani Government arrested a number of persons including Mujib in connection with the Agartala Conspiracy Case but the case had to be dropped by the Government due to a popular uprising in East Pakistan without even completing the case.
The case was filed in early 1968 and implicated Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and others in conspiring with India against the stability of Pakistan. The case is officially called State vs. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and others, but are popularly known as Agartala Shoŗojontro Mamla (Agartala conspiracy case) as the main conspiracy was purported to have taken place in the Indian city of Agartala in Tripura state, where Sheikh Mujib's associates met Indian military officials.
On 22 February 2011, one of the accused of the Agartala conspiracy case, Shawkat Ali, told the parliament in Bangladesh that the Agartala conspiracy case was not false and the charges brought against the accused were all true. He also confirmed that Navy Steward -Mujibur Rahman and the Educationist-Mohammad Ali Reza had indeed gone to Agartala, India to seek Indian support for Bangladesh's independence.
The case was dropped due to a near local uprising.
What if Pakistan, at the time took action or prepared to launch a major crackdown with their allies aid? CIA and other western Indonesian Communist Purge just three years earlier, while it may take some time ensure loyal militias and Pakistani armed forces can prepared for at least partial Indian confrontation if only shooting when loyal units attempt to liquidate anyone trying to escape and given Burma is a Pakistani ally it would be unlikely they would flee.
While I'm unsure it would the end the issue of Bengali nationalism the idea of the POD is a large scale uprising backed by full Indian invasion into a much smaller scale with with East Pakistan a clear US commitment.
I would say the time is the issue given the US war in Vietnam was at it's height during 1968, well the Vietnam part of the war in Indochina.
Would this cause the US, in fear of looking weak to the Soviet's to send Pakistan billions in aid and help in training and hunting down dissidents to prepare to deal with the issue or would it inflame tensions in Vietnam as the US thinking India is a USSR puppet state is trying to push the West out of Asia and confront them to try and get them to backdown during negotiations?
