Aftermath of a failed invasion of Malta

What would be the after efects if the Axis plan to invade Malta went ahead only for it to fail badly with the majority of the paratroopers and the seaborne invasion force being killed, injured or captured along with heavy Kreigsmarine and Regia Marina casualites.

Would this have had any profound effect on the war? Earlier end in North Africa and the Mediterrenean in general?

in a sense it doesn't really change much because nearly all of the air power and ground troops earmarked for Malta ended up being sent to Africa to defend the alemain line and they were all lost eventually anyway after operation torch

Well coupled with Torch it might unseat Mussolini. (2 staggering defeats in a matter of months)

Not only that, the men and equipment lost in a failed attempt to seize Malta would seriously hamper Hitler's own ability to wage war in the Mediterranean-- not to mention the possible consequences for his campaign on the Eastern Front and his efforts to shore up the Reich's Atlantic defenses.

The paratroopers who survive cause a bit of panic but the seaborne force is slaughtered by the RN before it can create a significant beachead.
Then I can comment on Malta atleast, but depending on how the paratroopers acted, this could lead to either an extremely pro or anti Italian sentiment after the war...It all depends whether the paratroopers are Italian or German, 'Liberators' or 'Invaders'.
