After the Austrian victory in the Austro-Prussian war, told in newspapers, 1866-2010

Austrian army decisively defeats the Prussians

September 10, 1866
Today, the representatives of Austria, Prussia and their perspective allies, and Denmark met in Budapest for a peace treaty. According to the Peace of Budapest, Austria will regain Silesia and Lombardy-Venetia, Italy will dissolve back into the smaller states, All of Prussia's allies will join the German confederation. Prussia will lose the Rhineland/Westphalia area. Schleswig-Holstein is to be made a new princely state under the Duke of Augustenberg, and Denmark will regain North Schleswig.

EDIT: Revised the Timeline so It can be more "AH-ish"

Riots in Berlin

Disgruntled veterans and citizens rioted in the streets of Berlin today, protesting Prussia's surrender.

I think the whole of Italy becoming a client kingdom is out of scope even for victorious Austria. They might want Lombardy back, and they might try to partition Italy into the smaller states it once was - although I'm not sure whether the last can be done against the clear will of the population.

And I also doubt that Schleswig-Holstein would go back to Denmark. Austria recently fought a war against that. Wasn't it an Austrian idea to make it a new princely state under one branch of the house of Glücksburg?

Furthermore, if Austria wins and dismantles Prussia, they have to think about what to do with the Zollverein, of which most German states are members of, yet Austria is not.

Nappy III will butt in to protect his Italian protege, but he won't object to Austria acquiring Silesia in lieu of Lambardy-Venice, and putting the deposed GDs of Tuscany and Modena into new principalities carved from the Prussian Rhine Provinces.

S/H is more likely to go to the Duke of Augustenberg, or possibly to an Austrian Archduke. Denmark may regain North Schleswig, though.

Zollverein dissolves

September 11, 1866
Day after the peace of Budapest, the German customs union, the Zollverein is dissolved by Austria. It will be replaced by the Großdeutsches Zollverein, created to "Preserve Austrian hegemony and to eliminate Prussian influence."

Russian Troops invade Posen-land

September 13, 1866

After the weakening of Prussia, Russian forces, under Tsar Alexander II attacked Posen province, forcing many Ethnic Germans to leave the area. Riots still continue in Berlin, protesting the war now.

EDIT: I still need suggestions for a united Germany mad by Austria, and how about Alsace-Lorraine?

The Russian invasion of Posen could trigger a pan-German reaction. A foreign attacker could provide the lever for a united Germany, like the German-French War in OTL.

Prussia has been the only supporter of Russia in the repression of the Polish insurrection. Believing that Russia can attack Prussia is beyond ASB.

Plus considering how awkward their Polish territories have been would they really want to bring more potentially rebellious Poles into the Empire?

I'm confused. If this is based in 1866, how can Alsace-Lorraine be a part of Germany? It still belonged to France at this point.

That's just a minor glitch, same as including Bavaria and the other German states which took the Austrian side in 1866 :p
