This was the case up until the dissolution of the Belgian colony of Ruanda-Urundi. Buganda was an independent Kingdom. Its people are called the Baganda but are also known as the Ganda which is where the name Uganda comes from." One cluster of African states was located around what are known as the "African Great Lakes" centred on Lake Victoria. To the Southwest were located the traditional Hutu Kingdoms whose kings generally took the title "Mwami" and which were historically subservient to the Mwamiate of Ruanda (Rwanda), the most Hutu Kingdom. While various ethnicites made up these Hutu Kingdoms, they were generally divided between the Ruanda centred around the Kingdom and the Banyaruanda (literally "those who come from Rwanda"). However, these also included the Southern Jiji as well as the Twa and many others. Located North and Northwest of Lake Victoria were the traditional Ugandan polities. These were made up of a large group of differing ethnic groups, the largest of whom being the Baganda of Ganda people of Buganada and the Banyoro of Bunyoro-Kitara. At the end of the 19th Century, circa 1880, the Kabakaiate of Buganda had began its rise to prominence in the region (Soon to be supported by the British). The Okumakaiate of Bunyoro-Kitara, on the other hand, would soon go into decline with its Southernmost peoples soon to declare the separate Kingdom of Tooro and Buganda annexing Buyaga and Bugangaizi. The latter two so-called "lost counties" would remain a part of Buganda until 1964 after which they were returned to Bunyoro-Kitara via referendum."

  • "Survival of these States While indeed all of these states were absorbed into the colonial empires of Britain, Germany, and later Belgium, many continued to exist as sub-national polities within these European empires and many continue to exist today within independent African states. The Kingdoms of Buganda, Bunyoro-Kitara, Busoga, Tooro, and Ankole became constituent kingdoms within Uganda when it gained independence on October 9, 1962. In fact, the first president of Uganda, Edward Mutesa, was also the Mutesa II the Kabaka of Buganda. These kingdoms were all abolished between 1966 and 1967 by Idi Amin. All except Ankole were restored in 1993. The Kingdom of Rwanda, with German and then Belgian assistance, soon absorbed many of its vassal Hutu Kingdoms in the early 20th century. Upon the dissolution of the Belgian colony of Ruanda-Urundi on July 1, 1962, the states of Rwanda and Burundi gain independence as Kingdoms. The later 20th century saw the deposition of the monarchy in both states and the establishment of republics. All traditional states within Tanganyika lasted throughout German and later British colonial rule. They were abolished when Tanganyika gained independence on December 9, 1961. The Kingdom of Wanga in Kenya continued to this day. Sourcing I made this map because historical maps covering traditional African polities suffer from a tragic amount undersourcing. This map was made using 5 maps as a base with cross referencing with sources on worldstatesmen.com"

Portugese routes in Mozambique

Some of these maps are awfully low-res, it seems that copying everything in mass isn't exactly the best idea
I doubt I will go back to make sure everyone is the correct quality.(well, I definitely will for a few)

So for where the quality is too low I hope the sources given and reverse image searching would be enough to make up for the bad quality.

how many times are you going to repost the same exact map

also, please put these images/geographical regions under spoilers, scrolling down the burj khalifa every time you post to find something is a pain.
Yeah, it's not perfect, but I for one am extremely grateful for all the material @PecuTheGreat is finding and making available and that's all I'm going to say

Okay, I am going back and changing some of the blurriest maps for the source maps. Also, the maps are regionally organized and I drop I full region of Maps that's been compiled at once.

But before that, here's a Map of the Igala Kingdom (a bit blurry)

Okay, I have begun fixing these Maps as the link here will show but in the mean time, let me add a dose of Sahara and its pripehries maps, first with an outlier from the region.
