Afghan Civil War in the 1970s?

When the last king of Afghanistan, Mohammad Zahir Shah, was undergoing eye surgery in Italy he was deposed in a bloodless coup. Zahir Shah decided not to go against this and abdicated, though there was a chance that if he had gone against the republicans a civil war might have broken out. What would happen had Afghanistan collapsed in a state of civil war around 1974?

no afghan mujahideen or soviet intervention but you would soviets aiding the republicans and the united states aiding the monarchists

That would be interesting, but why would the US aid the Monarchists? We are a Republican government after all and we wouldn't want the Republicans turning red potentially.

We are a Republican government after all
Its not like the US has cared about that given alliances with saudi arabia , the shah of Iran and other monarchies in the middle east

we wouldn't want the Republicans turning red potentially.
The monarchy can't go pro-soviet and the republicans will be fair more friendly to the soviet union then the monarchy ever could be unless the monarchists have no chance there no reason not to support them
