In 454 the powerful Magister Militum Aetius was assassinated by emperor Valentinian III. During the following year the emperor would be killed by two soldiers loyal to Aetius. The empire was so deprived of its capable military leader and the only man who could have kept the empire together through his legitimacy ( Valentinian’s death meant the end of many treaties with Germanic kingdoms and the loss of control over certain provinces).

What would have happened if Valentinian died a natural death a couple of months before killing Aetius? How would Aetius handle the internal and external situation? Who would become the next emperor? Who would succeeds Aetius as most powerful man in the empire?
