Let's say (plausibility thereof aside) that William Jennings Bryan wins the election in 1896. What I'm specifically interested in here is what happens when he runs for re-election; specifically...
Who are the major candidates at the 1900 Republican National Convention? If the opportunity emerges, who are the most likeky dark horses?
Given the above, who is most likely to win the nomination?
If likely to be relevant -- who is nominated for Vice President?
Given the nominee (and, discussing as briefly as possible, his term so far), what are Bryan's chances of being re-elected?
If the Republican wins -- how, if at all (to any significant extent), do the next four to eight years differ from the 19-aughts of OTL?
CONSOLIDATE: My own answers:
William McKinley seems like the sort who will run for the nomination again. If so, I expect he'll be opposed by the usual suspects, like former rival Thomas Reed as well as the political machines of Platt and/or Quay; not sure if they manage to coordinate a formidable rival this time around or not. There's also the question of whether the 1898 New York Gubernatorial Election is affected or not -- if Frank S Black is renominated, he's likely to be a contender; if Theodore Roosevelt, it's harder to say.
Since he's the only one I'm fairly sure will be a candidate, it's seems fair to say that McKinley could well be nominated a second time.
Not that it's likely to be relevant, but depending on if TR is still elected Governor of New York, this could get interesting -- I do wonder if Republicans will consider the runner up from last convention, Henry Clay Evans, or if Mark Hanna still pushes for Jonathan P Dolliver?
Based on comments elsewhere by @David T and others -- I'd say Bryan is more likely than not to be defeated for re-election.
As to how a President McKinley elected in 1900 would differ from OTL -- aside from any Spanish-American War having a different result (e.g. no annexation of the Philippines), it's kind of hard for me to say. For that reason, I'm actually really interested in this part in particular.
